Hey Conspirators,
Short answer: no, John Oliver is not John Cena. But they do have the same birthday.
Yes, I know it’s not Monday morning. But Oliver’s most recent Last Week Tonight episode focused on conspiracy theories and, well, we couldn’t wait to chat about it.
Yes, Oliver pokes some fun at the typical, easily disproved theories like the faked moon landing or the flat earth theory. But he also outlines something more important: how certain conspiracy theories can be dangerous, specifically in regard to COVID-19. For instance, some people think the whole pandemic is a hoax, others think it is government-planned, others think it is caused by 5G cell towers...you know, totally normal thoughts.
He presents good arguments on the perils of conspiracy theories in today’s internet age, and he even outlines three questions to ask when presented with a theory:
Is there a rational, non-conspiracy explanation?
Has this been held up to scrutiny by experts? (preferably more than one)
How plausible is this conspiracy as a practical matter? (i.e. how many people would it take to cover this up? How much would it cost?)
Honestly? We kind of love these. Expect to see them at the end of some future Nibbles so we can better answer the question that lingers over every conspiracy theory out there: is it real?
Anyway, next Monday get ready for some interdimensional travel.
Stay ‘spicious.
